BREAKING: Analyst Slams Browns $4.75 Million Offseason Move

Analyst Slams Browns $4.75 Million Offseason Move

Getty Analyst slams Browns free agent signing.

The Cleveland Browns had a relatively quiet offseason but did make one signing which one analyst believes they already regret.

The Browns signed defensive end Joe Tryon-Shoyinka on the first day of free agency to a one-year, $4.75 million contract with $4.19 million guaranteed. It wasn’t a high-priced move, but Cleveland acted quickly to sign him.

However, in training camp, Tryon-Shoyinka struggled, and in two games, he has yet to record a tackle. Browns analyst Tony Camino of DawgPoundDaily believes Cleveland already regrets the move.

“With Tampa Bay, Tryon-Shoyinka was a solid rotational piece in his second and third seasons. But he really struggled in his final year under contract,” Camino wrote. “He put up a pass rush win rate of just 8.9 percent, which ranked in the bottom third out of pass rushers with at least 125 pass rush snaps… Tryon-Shoyinka was signed at a price of a rotational edge. But he was one of the final roster spots and is lower in the pecking order than Cameron Thomas.

“Former Browns defensive end Za’Darius Smith was released by the Lions this offseason and signed with the Eagles on a deal worth less than what Tryon-Shoyinka got,” Camino added. “Based on how camp and the start of the season have gone for Tryon-Shoyinka, it seems the Browns would have been better off with a veteran like Smith or someone else. However, it’s reasonable based on where the team’s at to roll the dice on a first-round reclamation project over someone who has little to no future with the team.”

Camino is already calling the signing a regretful one after two games.

Tryon-Shoyinka Was Supposed to Help Browns’ Pass Rush

Cleveland made the move to sign Tryon-Shoyinka to help add to the pass rush.

Tryon-Shoyinka was going to be part of the defensive line rotation and give the team more options getting after the quarterback.

“Some of the veterans, whether it’s Maliek Collins and Joe, trying to help continue to boost our pass rush, especially on the interior,” Browns general manager Andrew Berry said. “Whether it’s bringing back Devin Bush who played really well for us at both mike and will. Whether it’s being opportunistic with Teven Jenkins or signing Cornelius Lucas to be a swing tackle. Those are real and they’re important pieces.”

However, in two games, he hasn’t been able to get after the quarterback and looks like a bad signing.

Ex-Husky Tryon-Shoyinka Gets NFL Fresh Start in Cleveland

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Tryon-Shoyinka 32nd overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. But the team declined his fifth-year option, making him a free agent after four seasons.

Tryon-Shoyinka quickly signed with the Browns, and he said he felt like it was a place for him to thrive.

“I had a great experience in Tampa,” Tryon-Shoyinka said. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Things happen for a reason, and I ended up in a great (place) like Cleveland. And I’m sure that with this scheme and everything that we have set in place, and I’m supposed to be here. I know this is the place where I want to be. So, I’m definitely blessed.”

The hope for the Browns is that the former first-round pick starts to have more success starting in Week 3.
