The Dallas Cowboys know that even thought they have a new head coach in town, fans still expect this team to compete for a post-season berth at the very minimum.  The amount of highly paid talent on this roster has been talked about all off-season long.  Now it is time to prove it.

However, according to one reporter, there could be a fairly shocking trade on the way.

As a result of the Dallas Cowboys’ 31-13 loss to the Baltimore Ravens at AT&T Stadium, Brian Schottenheimer is facing a dilemma with quarterback Joe Milton:

With the offense and Milton struggling for the second consecutive game, and against the Ravens, the receiver room didn’t get a fair chance to show what they could do.

Which brings us to a rather interesting topic and we saw it discussed online, and that is bringing in Will Grier so the Cowboys can properly evaluate the receiver room.

Or … trading for outside help, in the form of, say, Giants veteran backup Jameis Winston, as is being suggested by Cowboys insider Nick Harris of the Star-Telegram?

And it is here where Schottenheimer is between a rock and a hard place.

Milton is so raw that the only way he will get better is through live reps, but the downside, as we saw against the Ravens, is that others suffer when things don’t go well, with tight end John Stephens Jr. in the first half, leading the offense with just 12 yards.

With one final preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons before roster cuts, the Cowboys are in a bind with Milton.

Do they continue to play him knowing that it is the only way for him to develop, despite it potentially being detrimental to the receiver room? Or do they sit or allow him to play a quarter or half against the Falcons and then turn it over to Grier?

Or – even as Schotty insists he’s not hitting the “panic button” – do the Cowboys temporarily give up on the planned project and make a trade?

The backup job was thought to be Milton’s, but after two poor preseason outings, the Cowboys now have a decision to make because if Dak Prescott goes down injured again, based on what we’ve seen this preseason, the Cowboys are in for a world of hurt.

Yes, it is “only” preseason, but Schottenheimer and this Jerry Jones-led front office has a call to make this week.

Will they stick with the plan? Will they stick with Joe Milton?
