The Steelers’ quarterback situation is still unclear heading into 2026, but they are still hoping to have Aaron Rodgers join them.
After settling on Mike McCarthy as the next head coach in Pittsburgh, the Steelers just had one burning question left to answer: who is going to start at quarterback in 2026? For months, it has seemed like Aaron Rodgers was going to re-sign with the team for at least one more season, but now the NFL Draft has come and gone, and Rodgers still has not made a decision on his future.
While things are still up in the air with Rodgers, president Art Rooney II is still confident that a final decision will be made soon.
“Even though I thought it probably would have been concluded by now, I think we will come to a conclusion here in the next few weeks,” Rooney shared on The Insiders.
While Rooney said he does expect a resolution soon, he did not say which way he expects the decision to go. The Steelers would love to have Rodgers and, based on their free agency and NFL Draft moves, clearly expect him to be able to play, but that’s not a given at this point.
Rooney also had said that he wanted a decision from Rodgers before the NFL Draft, a wish that was clearly not granted. Now, everybody is playing the waiting game as Rodgers makes up his mind about what he wants to do.
If Rodgers ends up retiring and not returning to play for the Steelers, the starting job would likely go to either Will Howard, a Day 3 pick in 2025, or 2026 third-rounder Drew Allar. Both guys were successful quarterbacks in college, but neither has proven anything at the NFL level, so it would mark a turn to the future for a Steelers team that is trying to squeeze as much winning as possible out of its aging core.
