He spent extra time working with the scout team and thinking back on his college days at Missouri Western State University. As the NFL preseason moves forward, Mahomes is getting ready to lead the Chiefs through a tough early schedule with fresh focus.

Mahomes shared his thoughts on how practicing with the scout team gave him a chance to experiment more than in regular camp practices. “Yeah, it’s fun. You get to push the envelope a little bit.

You get to try stuff a little more than you would try in a regular training camp practice,” Mahomes said. He also spoke of how this helped him work on fakes to trick defenses and improve his ability to throw into tighter windows.

One of the biggest positives Mahomes sees this year is the energy brought by the Chiefs’ younger players. Their zeal to compete adds a fresh dynamic alongside the experience of established team leaders.“I think you learned – I mean, I didn’t learn this, but you know how hungry these guys are. It started in OTAs, and guys are ready to compete; they’re ready to get there and prove who we are,”

Mahomes explained.Meanwhile, his intensity this offseason has stood out even to his veteran teammates. “I wanted to up my mentality,” Mahomes said of his approach to camp, adding “Sometimes you get to camp, and you just want to go out there and dominate the day. I want to dominate every single rep. No days off. You have to get better and better every day.”

As the preseason winds down, it’s not yet clear if Mahomes will play in the Kansas City Chiefs’ last preseason game against the Chicago Bears at Arrowhead Stadium. The quarterback is leaving the decision to head coach Andy Reid and is ready to contribute whenever called upon.

With a tough early schedule ahead, Mahomes’ approach and leadership will be important for the Chiefs’ success this NFL season.
