Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones brought Jay-Z and Dez Bryant into the conversation recently when discussing his negotiations with current star defensive end Micah Parsons.
Parsons has been frustrated because the Cowboys have failed to negotiate with his agent, David Mulugheta, and instead have wanted to negotiate with him directly. Those actions led to Parsons requesting a trade.
Jerry Jones recently told reporters why he prefers to negotiate with players and not agents.
“Because when we have a problem with the player, the agent is nowhere to be found,” he said. “Jay-Z said that Dez would make all meetings. Jay-Z and I negotiated the contract, spent hours. He said, ‘Anybody in my organization is on time.’ He said, ‘My office used to be on the street corner, and I’ve always been early. So, they will be on time.’
“And what did I say? I said, ‘I’m going to call you [when I have a problem].’ He quit taking my call.”
Dez Bryant and Jay-Z/Roc Nation clearly did not appreciate the comments from Jones.
Bryant posted about the comments on X first, doing so Saturday evening.

“JERRY JONES I DON’T THINK ITS SMART TO MENTION MY NAME,” Bryant said, in all caps. “I KEPT QUIET ABOUT A LOT OF UNFAIR [expletive].. ON SOME G [expletive]… WE CAN HAVE STORY TIME IF THAT’S WHAT WE ARE DOING.”
On Sunday, Roc Nation Sports/Jay-Z also responded to Jones’ claims.
“In 2015, at the 21 club, on a napkin, Jerry Jones, Juan Perez, Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter, and Stephen Jones negotiated a five-year, $70 million deal, which included a $45 million guarantee and a $20 million signing bonus for Dez Bryant. At the time, it was the second-largest contract for a wide receiver in NFL history,” the post from Roc Nation stated.
“The claim that Mr. Carter or Roc Nation representatives did not return a call from Jerry Jones is not only a false statement, but it’s also a comical one.”
The Cowboys and Jerry Jones have had some interesting contract negotiations over the years.
In 2024, they signed star receiver CeeDee Lamb and star quarterback Dak Prescott to extensions, but not before lengthy negotiations that lasted past training camp.
Micah Parsons said in his statement announcing the trade request that he had his agent reach out to the Cowboys last offseason to try to secure an extension. He then tried to start up negotiations with the Cowboys again after the 2024 season, he said, but was met with “radio silence.”
“Up to today the team has not had a single conversation with my agent about a contract,” he said. “Not one demand has been made by my agent about money, years or anything else. Still, I stayed quiet, but again, after repeated shots at myself and all the narratives I have made a tough decision. I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys.”
CeeDee Lamb called out the Cowboys on X after Parsons’ trade request.
“Never fails dawg. Just pay the man what you owe em,” he posted. ”No need for the extra curricular.”
It will be interesting to see what ultimately happens with Micah Parsons and the Cowboys in the weeks to come.
