NFL free agency: Browns sign Steelers veteran to fill safety need - Dawgs By Nature

The completion of the Cleveland Browns rookie minicamp this weekend leads right into veterans joining the new guys for voluntary activities. While minicamp was all about the quarterbacks from the outside looking in, the front office and coaching staff were also evaluating the seven drafted players, 13 undrafted guys and numerous tryout players.

The team was likely hoping that they could find hope at the safety position, enough to rely on an undrafted player or sign one of the guys in for a tryout. Safety, along with wide receiver, were clear needs following the NFL draft, with Diontae Johnson brought in to help the pass-catching group.

Cleveland’s decision makers must not have loved what they saw because, reportedly, they are brining in S Damontae Kazee to help at safety:

The soon-to-be 32-year-old Kazee is going into his ninth season in the NFL after being selected in the 5th round of the 2017 NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons. After completing his rookie contract with the Falcons, Kazee spent one year with the Dallas Cowboys before the last three with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

With 17 career interceptions, 24 passes defended, seven forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, three tackles for loss and 363 tackles, Kazee has a well-rounded game. Last year, Kazee played 276 of his 405 snaps at free safety, according to Pro Football Focus, while also being a part of their special teams units as well.

Overall, PFF graded Kazee with a 60.8 with a strong tackling grade of 82.4.

This late in NFL free agency, Kazee is a quality addition that can help the Browns defense at safety and slot corner.
