BREAKING NEWS : The Most Important Dallas Cowboys Contract That Must Be Renewed

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and vice presodent of player personnel Will McClay

Although there are several Dallas Cowboys contracts up for renewal, one is a lot more pressing than the rest. In fact, renewing this person can determine the success of the team from this point forward. That person is none other than Will McClay.

Why Getting Another Dallas Cowboys Contract for Will McClay is Crucial

A Resounding Impact on the Current Cowboys Team

McClay has been with the Dallas Cowboys since back in 2002 as a regular scout. Through the years, he has developed himself into what we know today as the immaculate picker of players and VP of player personnel. He took on the VP job back in 2017 and ushered in several of the Cowboys best players and All-Pros.

Jerry Jones gets the final say on all decisions performed by the organization, but it’s McClay who finds the magic combination of what the team needs and what’s available. He’s managed to pick 16 Pro Bowl players, leading the NFL in that selection process. McClay is responsible for rebuilding the offensive line with a leadership pick in Tyler Smith at Offensive Guard. He recreated that success with Micah Parsons, who managed to step up in a huge way this past year when the defense suffered endless injuries.

More recently, both KaVontae Turpin and Brandon Aubrey, former USFL players, were picked up as free agents. Both players arrived on the Pro Bowl list in 2024. A large part of seeing their capabilities at a high level comes from that eye that only Will McClay is capable of.

Why A Dallas Cowboys Contract for Will McClay is Imperative

The Cowboys shouldn’t kick rocks about keeping McClay. He continues to show his value by striking gold repeatedly. There’s no reason to delay his contract. Yet, the Cowboys have been quiet about the entire organization’s fate. But Jerry Jones wasn’t quiet about his plan to supplement the team’s weaknesses through the draft. He doesn’t plan on paying high contracts to free agents in the offseason.

With the problems for the team, they’ll need to catch lightning in a bottle this draft class if they aren’t wanting to add in players already in the league. The only way for the team to manage that is to keep McClay. A Cowboys team without McClay is bound to be a busted draft. It would ruin the 2025 season well before it starts.

Part of the Uncertainty with McClay’s Future

Jerry Jones will need to make a big decision on the future of the organization. Yes, there’s the head coach position to consider, but the draft is even more important. However, to keep McClay would be an acknowledgment of the fact that Jones is incapable of making the correct big moves on his own. The blow to his ego could lead to letting McClay walk out the door.

It’s clear that the Cowboys will need to rebuild. They have their most important pieces in place with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb. But two guys don’t make a team. Right now, the Cowboys could use another offensive weapon to help take the edge off of Lamb. They could use a running back to bolster a run game that showed substantial potential at the end of the season. The Cowboys might want to hit big in the defensive tackle department, especially since they could lose Osa Odighizuwa to free agency. There are plenty of question marks over this organization. And they are more likely to erase them with Will McClay.
