On Saturday, the Green Bay Packers officially shut down cornerback Jaire Alexander. Earlier this week, it was revealed that Alexander underwent arthroscopic surgery to fix a swelling issue that he’s had since injuring his PCL in Week 11 against the Chicago Bears. According to reports by the likes of ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Alexander could return to the Packers by the Super Bowl, if the team can make it that far without him.
Without the former All-Pro, expect to see a lot of Carrington Valentine and Eric Stokes at outside cornerback to end the season. With starting safety Evan Williams (quad) already ruled out against the Bears on Sunday, that should push fellow rookie safety Javon Bullard out of the slot, meaning that Keisean Nixon — who is a preferred outside cornerback — would move to the position for nickel reps.
The Packers didn’t promote anyone to the 53-man roster going into the Bears game, but they did elevate two practice squad players for the gameday roster: linebacker Michael Barrett and safety Omar Brown. Brown has been elevated the last two weeks, too. He played six special teams snaps against the New Orleans Saints and also got eight defensive snaps in garbage time during the 34-0 Green Bay victory. He was elevated but ultimately a healthy scratch against the Minnesota Vikings.
Barrett, meanwhile, has a chance to make his first appearance in a Packers’ uniform on Sunday. The 5’11” coverage linebacker was drafted in the seventh round by the Carolina Panthers last April out of Michigan before making stops in Seattle and Cleveland before finding his way to Green Bay. The Packers signed Barrett in late November after a release from the Browns’ practice squad.
Green Bay’s linebackers have struggled in coverage, as opposing offenses continue to pepper the defense in the middle of the field. With starting middle linebacker Quay Walker (ankle) for his third consecutive game, it wouldn’t be a shock to see Barrett play a couple of snaps here and there in obvious passing situations on Sunday.
