As the Pittsburgh Steelers continue to await Aaron Rodgers and his camp on a decision, the opinions and narratives continue to fly. It’s a bizarre situation that has had the Steelers bound for months, and nothing concrete has happened just yet.

One of the latest Rodgers takes comes by way of Mike Florio on Pro Football Talk Live, and it’s a doozy.

When speculating over Rodgers and his current situation with the Steelers, Florio tossed out a thought that seems so absurd that, well, to be honest, it might just happen.

“What if Aaron Rodgers is looking for an unwritten understanding… a handshake deal? If we get to Week 8 and we’re 3-5 or 2-6, you’ll just release me before the trade deadline and I can go pick [another team],” Florio said.

On one hand, this sounds like a completely ridiculous take. It sounds like Florio is out of things to talk about at this stage in the game. After all, it is the offseason.

In all likelihood, this is merely Rodgers taking his sweet time as usual. This is what we’ve come to learn about Rodgers for a few years now. He does this every year, it seems like, for the past few offseasons. He will operate on his time and his time only, leaving whatever franchise he is with to be held for ransom.

The only sensible bit of supporting information from Florio, in this entire take, is the idea that there could be another team to lose their quarterback in November or December, and they’d be scrambling for an answer.

At that point, Rodgers would be sitting there looking like a knight in shining armor.

But that is one giant hypothetical. That is a massive ‘what if’ on Florio’s part.

Now, I hate to do this, but let’s make it make sense, shall we? Just for the sake of argument, let’s do it.

Look at what happened to the Kansas City Chiefs last year. Patrick Mahomes goes down with an ACL tear in mid-December. What if something like that happened in the coming year?

What if, late November or early December, a team like the Dallas Cowboys or New England Patriots, for example, lost Dak Prescott or Drake Maye to injury? There is a good chance either team could be in the thick of the playoff race at that point.

If the Steelers were completely out of it and Rodgers was allowed to be a free agent just before the trade deadline, he’d have a clear path to come in and take over for a team like that.

It’s a stretch. It’s a lot of hypothetical dominoes that would have to fall. But that’s the take we’re dealing with here from Florio.
