Just three hours after agreeing to pay $1 million to nullify their future contract with Darnell Savage, the Pittsburgh Steelers quickly signed Damar Hamlin, a former safety for the Buffalo Bills and a 1st-round draft pick.
This decision has left Steelers fans disappointed, as they had hoped to see Savage join their defense for the 2026 season.

Savage, who signed a one-year deal with the Steelers, was expected to be a key piece in the secondary alongside Joey Porter Jr. and Jaquan Brisker. However, throughout his career, Savage has accumulated 3 seasons with over 70 tackles and 5 pass deflections.
However, medical concerns delayed the contract, and the Steelers decided to cancel the deal before it could even start.
While fans were initially excited about Savage’s potential, the Steelers quickly signed Hamlin, a player with 53 NFL games under his belt, including 27 starts.
Hamlin, selected in the 6th round by the Buffalo Bills, has had 4 solid seasons, with 3 interceptions and 6 pass deflections. He also became famous for his remarkable return to the game after a life-threatening incident on the field, which made him even more beloved.
Despite this, the decision to sign Hamlin has left many fans surprised and dissatisfied with the choice.

Steelers GM John Schneider shared, “I know this decision will disappoint many, but we’re not just looking at the present, but also the future. This is a step to keep the team strong.”
Damar Hamlin is clearly more talented than Darnell Savage and has the flexibility to play both free and strong safety. This allows the Steelers to save money by paying Hamlin less, while still maintaining a high level of defensive quality.
After the announcement about Savage, the Steelers community was divided. While Hamlin has a strong connection to Pittsburgh, many feel the decision was rushed.
“We paid $1 million to cancel Savage’s contract, and now we’re signing Hamlin. It feels like everything is being disrupted,” one fan shared.
Hamlin brings a strong connection to the Steelers, but many fans are still questioning whether this decision is right for the defense.
The Steelers now face the challenge of managing a newly revamped defense with high expectations. Signing Hamlin could cause some disruption.
The decision to cancel the contract with Savage and sign Hamlin could turn out to be a pivotal moment, or a costly mistake for the team.
