The Kansas City Chiefs‘ rookie class had high moments along with significant lows during the 2025 season. According to ESPN’s Aaron Schatz, the Chiefs’ rookie class ranks 21st overall amongst the 32 teams in the league. Here’s what Schaltz wrote about the first-year Kansas City players who stood out in 2025.
“First-round pick Josh Simmons managed to start only eight games as the Chiefs’ top rookie,” wrote Schaltz, “He was above average with a 91.6% pass-block win rate but below average with a 71.6% run-block win rate. Undrafted Esa Pole started four games when Simmons was out late in the season with a wrist injury.”
The Chiefs were able to showcase their rookie class more than most teams after being eliminated from postseason contention late in the season. The defense was affected tremendously as multiple players had the opportunity to make a name for themselves.
“On defense, third-round cornerback Nohl Williams had five starts and 48 combined tackles with five passes defensed,” wrote Schaltz, “Another cornerback, undrafted free agent Kevin Knowles, pitched in on special teams and also had two passes defensed late in the season. Third-round edge rusher Ashton Gillotte had 38 combined tackles and 1.5 sacks. Second-round defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott played only five games before a torn ACL.”
One of the Chiefs’ most consistent rookies was running back Brashard Smith, who showed his versatility. At the same time, Jalen Royals didn’t receive the playing time due to injuries, and the depth chart showed promise in the Week 18 regular season finale.
