In an offseason full of talk about upgrading the offensive side of the ball, the New England Patriots’ need for defensive upgrades cannot be overlooked.
Athlon Sports’ Luke Easterling has projected the Patriots to select Penn State defensive end Abdul Carter with the No. 4 overall pick in his latest mock draft, highlighting the importance of strengthening their defense.
Widely considered the first true defensive player to be taken off the board, Carter stands out as a pure defensive prospect. While Travis Hunter plays cornerback, his role as a receiver makes him a more versatile player, rather than a true defensive force like Carter.
Carter has been managing a shoulder injury since the middle of the college football season, which prevented him from participating in workouts at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Last week, news broke that he had a stress reaction in his foot and might require surgery, which could have caused his stock to drop on draft night. Fortunately, surgery was avoided, and Carter is not expected to suffer any setbacks before performing at Penn State’s Pro Day on March 28.
If fully healthy, he would immediately become one of the best players on a New England defense that ranked 22nd in total defense in 2024. A dominant playmaker like Carter could significantly improve that ranking.
Carter’s health will be crucial moving forward. If he proves he is fully recovered at his Pro Day, he is almost certain to be a top-five pick and will make an immediate impact on the field.
