While some teams are scrambling to rebuild after missing the playoffs, the Chiefs, sitting comfortably with the No. 1 seed, are proving theyâre not ones to rest on their laurels. Even with a playoff bye week in hand, Andy Reid and his squad are staying busy behind the scenes, making moves to strengthen their roster. When youâre in a league like the NFL, thereâs no such thing as a day off. The question is, whatâs brewing in Kansas City? No matter the situation, the Chiefs arenât slowing down, even during their bye week. So, let us spill the tea for you.
The Chiefs made a few moves this week, starting by releasing LB Blake Lynch. Then, Andy Reidâs squad quickly re-signed WR Montrell Washington ahead of the divisional game, and now theyâve added two more players to the roster. It looks like Brett Veach is making some serious moves with the championship just around the corner. Veach has added free agents Shaun Bradley and Jason Taylor to the Chiefsâ roster.
Bradley, 27 years old, previously had brief stints with the Eagles and Texans (Injuries have mostly hampered his career). Drafted in 2021, Bradley has only played in a preseason game, that too in 2023. The Eagles released him the following year, with Houston signing the linebacker to its practice squad. Midway through this season, the Texans also released him, without giving him a chance to play a single game.
On the flip side, Jason Taylor has also joined the Chiefs camp. Just to clear up any confusion, weâre not talking about the former Dolphins legend, Jason Taylor. This is Jason Taylor II, the Oklahoma State guy the Chiefs have been eyeing for a while now. The 25-year-oldâs NFL career hasnât taken off yet. Taylor was drafted in 2023, and in the two years since, heâs changed teams twiceâfirst with the Rams, and then with the Cardinals, where he spent some time on their practice squad.
As the Chiefs make moves to boost their roster, they also might be at risk of losing some key staff members.
Andy Reid and the Chiefs face the risk of losing their personnel
As the Chiefs add new faces to their roster, thereâs also a bit of a storm brewing on the other side, the risk of losing key coaching staff. While theyâve been making moves to bolster the team, Andy Reid might have to deal with some big departures soon. The Jets, who are rebuilding their team from scratch, have interviewed Matt Nagy for their head coach position. If he leaves, the Chiefs will have to look for a new offensive coordinator. Woody Johnsonâs team has also interviewed Mike Borgonzi for their general manager role. And if that wasnât enough, they have requested an interview with the Chiefsâ main defensive lineup man, Steve Spagnuolo.
The Jets have other people on their list too. Theyâve also interviewed former Pats player Mike Vrabel and Super Bowl XX winner Ron Rivera. Woody Johnsonâs team has even considered their ex-coach, Rex Ryan. Besides the Jets, the Raiders have also knocked on Spagnuoloâs door after firing Antonio Pierce on Monday. With so many head coaches getting fired, all the teams are on the hunt to fill their positions. And itâs not just the Jets the Chiefs have to worry about losing their coaching staff too. The New Orleans Saints have also shown interest in Matt Nagy. So, if Nagy decides to part ways with the Chiefs, whoâs going to run the offense? Itâs a huge concern for Kansas City.
And itâll be interesting to see how things unfold.
