Adam Schefter: Mike Vrabel ‘absolutely’ leading candidate for Patriots head coach job

The NFL insider provides the latest update on New England’s coaching search.

Mike Vrabel leading candidate for Patriots head coach job, says Adam Schefter - Pats Pulpit

The New England Patriots are currently linked to five head coaching candidates, but one stands out among them as the clear frontrunner — at least in the eyes of NFL insider Adam Schefter.

Appearing on WEEI on Wednesday afternoon, Schefter said that Mike Vrabel is “absolutely the leading candidate” to eventually land the job. Vrabel is scheduled to interview with the Patriots on Thursday.

“He is a logical choice, and I think it probably would be a surprise if it didn’t work out,” Schefter said. “But you can go through any number of coaching searches over time and say, ‘Well, Josh McDaniels was supposed to get the Colts job, Bill Belichick was supposed to get the Jets job.’ Things happen, and there is a lot of interest in Mike.

“Do I think that the Patriots hold a tremendous amount of appeal to him? Yes. Do I think he to them? Yes. Is it logical? Of course. All those things are true, and in the end it probably gets done. But I don’t think it’s done. There are steps to go through, there’s a process that has to be followed. That’s kind of were we at. I don’t think it’s going to be a quick resolution this week.”

Vrabel is a member of the Patriots Hall of Fame and former head coach of the Tennessee Titans.
