Jerod Mayo dismisses claim that Patriots players stayed out too late before London game

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo denied that any of his players went out too late while in London last week.

Wide receiver Kendrick Bourne seemed to have called out some of his teammates for going out ahead of the team’s game overseas against the Jaguars. He referenced his younger self opting to party before the San Francisco 49ers’ Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020 when explaining that New England could have focused on the game better.

“So going out overseas, we have to be locked in. I’m not trying to point nobody out, but it’s just we have to focus on what matters,” Bourne told MassLive’s Mark Daniels. “You can go out, but what really matters while we’re here?”

Mayo refuted the veteran WR’s claim while fielding questions from the media on Friday. He said Bourne’s quote was taken out of context, but didn’t elaborate.

“No, there wasn’t an issue. I think it was taken out of context,” Mayo said. “I had a conversation with Bourne, and it was taken out of context. Those guys did a good job traveling and they did a good job adjusting to the time difference.”

When asked how Bourne was taken out of context, Mayo kept things brief with a Bill Belichick-esque response.

“I’m not going to get into that. Like I said at the beginning, our main focus is really just about the Jets,” he said.

After a week of catching plenty of flack for calling the Patriots a “soft” football team, Mayo appears to be adopting a more conservative approach at the podium.

Whether or not any of New England’s players enjoyed London’s nightlife a little too much last week, the team hasn’t played well on any continent since Week 1. Rookie quarterback Drake Maye has eased the offense’s struggles slightly, but not enough to stop getting blown out week after week.

Bourne reiterated to Daniels that the entire roster has to re-focus if they want to turn things around this season.

“It’s a growth thing. We have to grow. We have to grow up,” Bourne said. “We have to focus on what’s at hand. That’s the only way to get through it – to not focus on everything else. So, if I’m trying to become wealthy, I have to invest my money in the right places. I can’t be trying to go out and club because it’s taking away from my internal goal – winning football games.”
