The Detroit Lions capped off their season in historic fashion, defeating the Minnesota Vikings on “Sunday Night Football” to clinch the NFC North divisional title for the second consecutive year.
They also secured the No. 1 overall seed in the conference for the first time in franchise history, earning themselves a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the postseason
A key factor in Detroit’s dominant 31-9 win, which improved their record to 15-2, was running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who scored all four of the team’s touchdowns in the matchup.
With that performance, Gibbs finished the season with 20 total touchdowns, officially earning him the title of 2024 NFL touchdown king, as announced by both the Lions and the NFL.
The Lions posted a candid two-word message that read “King’s Landing”, playfully nodding to his consistent ability to find the end zone throughout the season.
All season long, before Montgomery got hurt, it has been a dynamic one-two punch of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery in the Detroit Lions’ backfield. Both Montgomery and Gibbs surpassed 1,000 scrimmage yards this season.
On Tuesday, the Lions received fantastic news when it was revealed that Montgomery, who was injured in a game against the Buffalo Bills a few weeks ago, is expected to return for the divisional round after Detroit’s bye week. His return will only add to the team’s explosiveness and effectiveness on offense.
Gibbs, in just his second NFL season, rushed 250 times for 1,412 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns, while also recording 52 receptions for 517 yards and four receiving touchdowns.
As one of the league’s top young backs and offensive talents, the hope in the Motor City is that Gibbs can carry his success and momentum into the playoffs, with the ultimate goal of securing a Super Bowl trophy.
