BREAKING: Detroit Lions trade scenario sends breakout edge rusher to Detroit

Detroit Lions trade scenario sends breakout edge rusher to Detroit image

The Detroit Lions have exceeded lofty expectations through seven games in 2024, as the team is 6-1 and atop the NFC North. Dan Campbell’s squad will travel to Lambeau Field to take on the Green Bay Packers in a pivotal divisional matchup in Week 9.

The Lions’ offense deserves most of the recognition for the team’s success, but Aaron Glenn’s defense continues to make steady improvements and has made some critical plays in key opportunities over the last few weeks.

Detroit’s roster is one of the deepest in football, but the group still has some glaring weaknesses, especially in the pass-rushing department. Season-ending injuries to Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport have decimated the unit, and general manager Brad Holmes should explore the trade market to bolster the edge rusher group.

There are a plethora of options on the market, but Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox believes New York Giants edge rusher Azeez Ojulari should be on Detroit’s radar at the Nov.5 trade deadline

After an impressive rookie campaign in 2021, posting eight sacks and 42 quarterback pressures, Ojulari was riddled with injuries and limited playing time in 2022 and 2023. But the former Georgia standout has bounced back this season and looks to have a bright future.

In 2024, Ojulari has totaled six sacks and 19 quarterback pressures with a 62.1 run defense grade. The former second-round pick has been fantastic in a rotational role for the Giants and would be a hot commodity on the trading block if New York is willing to deal him.

Ojulari isn’t a superstar, but he is a player on the rise and would immediately step in as a starter on the Lions’ defensive line. Additionally, the 24-year-old is on an inexpensive contract, and a Day 3 pick should be enough to bring the young edge rusher to the Motor City.

Though it will be tough to see Ojulari go, it’s the correct move for the Giants, as the franchise just paid Brian Burns a lucrative contract and needs some draft capital for the future. For the Lions, it would bolster the weakest unit on the team and give Detroit an up-and-coming defensive player for the future.
