A long line of transactions arrived on the eve of the finale in Foxborough.
The New England Patriots promoted tight end Jack Westover, defensive end Truman Jones, linebacker Monty Rice and cornerback Miles Battle to the 53-man roster ahead of Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills.
Each is now under contract with the organization through the 2025 season.
Four promoted to the 53
Westover, 25, has appeared in two games since signing to the scout team in October. To date, the Washington product’s rookie campaign includes one snap on offense to go with 21 snaps on special teams. Originally joining the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent, a settlement was reached amid training camp after the 6-foot-2, 245-pound tight end landed on injured reserve. An All-Pac-12 honorable mention last fall, Westover’s 52-game Huskies career brought 87 receptions for 849 yards and six touchdowns. He also visited the end zone as a rusher.
Jones, 24, served as the 148th captain in Harvard history. The 6-foot-3, 255-pound edge defender finished his Crimson tenure with 88 tackles, including 28.5 for loss, and 14.5 sacks. He also had a hand in three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and four blocked kicks. Undrafted in 2023, Jones spent the duration of his rookie campaign on the practice squad of the Kansas City Chiefs. The Super Bowl LVIII champion was retained on a futures contract last February before being released from the practice squad. A spot on New England’s was taken as the calendar turned to December.
Rice, 25, has seen 26 snaps on special teams through back-to-back standard elevations. The 6-foot-3, 233-pound linebacker split a tackle in the kicking game last weekend. Signing in November, Rice entered the NFL with the Tennessee Titans at pick No. 92 overall in the 2021 class. He appeared in 35 games, starting 10, during his stay and finished with 128 tackles and two pass deflections. After being claimed off waivers by the New Orleans Saints last December, the Georgia product was part of the 53-man roster deadline in August. He joined the practice squad of the Atlanta Falcons at its formation and was released in October.
Battle, 24, signed to New England’s practice squad in October following a September workout. The 6-foot-3, 197-pound former transfer from Ole Miss to Utah stepped into the NFL as part of Kansas City’s 2024 undrafted class. He was waived ahead of the 53-man roster deadline in August following a preseason that brought two tackles between time in the secondary and on special teams. Battle checked into 59 games during his collegiate career and was selected by the San Antonio Brahmas in July’s UFL draft.
Three moved to injured reserve
In corresponding 53-man moves, wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk, center Ben Brown and safety Jabrill Peppers have been placed on injured reserve after being ruled out on the final injury report.
Polk, 22, suffered a shoulder injury during his lone target last Sunday and had been a non-participant in practice since then. The No. 37 overall pick by way of Texas Tech and Washington concludes his rookie year with 33 targets, 12 catches, 87 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The 6-foot-1, 203-pound wideout saw action in 15 games, including seven starts.
Brown, 26, made 10 starts at center for the Patriots while staying in for 667 straight offensive snaps. The October addition off the practice squad of the Las Vegas Raiders had missed the past two weeks of practices while in the NFL’s concussion protocol. Going undrafted in 2022 after starting 40 games in a row at Ole Miss, the 6-foot-5, 313-pound pivot has also been a member of the Bengals, Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals.
Peppers, 29, had been inactive for back-to-back weeks before being ruled out due to a hamstring injury that kept him limited. The 5-foot-11, 217-pound safety started each of his six appearances this campaign, logging 40 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble. Reinstated from the commissioner’s exempt list in November, Peppers signed a three-year, $24 million extension amid training camp. The former All-American out of Michigan entered the NFL at pick No. 25 overall in the 2017 draft. A veteran of 99 games, he made stops with the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants before arriving in Foxborough in 2022.
Two standard elevations
And from New England’s practice squad, wide receiver Alex Erickson and tight end Mitchell Wilcox will serve as standard elevations against the No. 2 seed in the AFC. It will mark the third call-up for both vested veterans.
Erickson, 32, has handled 18 snaps in the kicking game since signing in December. The 6-foot, 195-pounder returned one punt for 15 yards as well three kickoffs for 90 yards during his latest appearance. Now 109 NFL games in, the Wisconsin alum began his career with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent in 2016. Stints with the Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers, Washington Commanders, New York Jets and Los Angeles Chargers followed. The run spans 112 catches for 1,373 yards and two touchdowns for Erickson, who has also tallied 1,318 yards across 164 punt returns and 2,819 yards across 113 kick returns.
