The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are riding a four-game winning streak as they head to AT&T Stadium to face the Dallas Cowboys in Week 16.
With only three games left on the schedule, the Buccaneers have turned their season around in a month and now lead the division and control their playoff destiny.
But is there a sense of looking too far ahead for this Tampa Bay roster? Not if the coaching staff have anything to do with it.
Baker Mayfield detailed that the coaching group does a good job of keeping the players in line with some good-natured pokes.
“You gotta have thick skin to be around our group,” Mayfield said. “Anybody can get it anytime, anywhere. It doesn’t matter who it is. That’s the best part of the group is have a good game, move on, gotta do it again.”
But what was the catalyst for the coaching group to be the ones to keep the roster humble?
As it turns out, it was a game earlier in the season against the Denver Broncos.
“When we started fast early in the year, Denver came in and took it to us,” Mayfield added. “So its next game, one game at a time mentality and this is the next one, so gotta be focused all on that.”
The Buccaneers were 2-0 and fresh off a win over the Detroit Lions, but the Broncos rolled into Raymond James Stadium and laid a 26-7 beatdown on Tampa Bay in what was a big reality check.
The Cowboys have endured some challenges, too, after starting 3-7. “Thick skin”? That’s been utilized as Dallas has won three of its last four to vault to 6-8 … to remain in the hunt in the NFC playoff chase.
Now, with playoffs well within reach, the Buccaneers must not lose sight of the task at hand. Their postseason ticket is yet to be punched, but with each win, it gets closer and closer. … Which makes taking care of the injury-riddled Cowboys the top priority. And if the Bucs players forget that, the coaching staff will make sure they’re reminded real quick. Or maybe the Cowboys will be in charge of doing the “reminding.”
