Rob Gronkowski’s path to NFL stardom with the New England Patriots wasn’t exactly a textbook story.

The larger-than-life tight end, who would go on to become a three-time Super Bowl champion and rack up an impressive 521 catches, 7,861 yards and 79 touchdowns over nine seasons with New England, had a draft interview that was anything but conventional.

During his pre-draft meeting with Bill Belichick and the Patriots’ leadership, “Gronk” did something most aspiring NFL players would never dare: He fell asleep.

Completely exhausted from a grueling interview circuit that involved 15 team visits, the young player was running on fumes.

“I was like, I’m going all out with ’em. I don’t give a s— no more. I’m going to walk in like I’m at the University of Arizona walking into a party. Because I’m sick of putting on a show. I first fall asleep on the table right in front of one of the highest members of the team, you know, but I need a nap. It wasn’t like I was in a meeting or anything,” Gronkowski said, via Spittin’ Chiclets.

After dozing off, Gronkowski struggled through discussions about college memories and found himself completely lost when assistant coach Bill O’Brien tried to walk him through a play diagram.

Most candidates would have been mortified, but not Gronkowski.

Despite the chaotic interview, his trademark confidence shone through and he remained convinced he could prove himself on the field.

Walking out of the meeting, he was uncertain whether he’d made a catastrophic impression or somehow charmed the Patriots’ brass.

Fortunately for both Gronkowski and the Patriots, the team saw beyond the unconventional interview and recognized the raw talent and potential lurking beneath the carefree exterior.

What could have been a disaster instead became the beginning of a legendary NFL partnership that would reshape the tight end position.
