In our “Let’s Argue” series, our Mark Gunnels considers the hot takes, wacky predictions and unpopular opinions of Kansas City Chiefs fans from all over the world.
The Chiefs’ offense is fine… other than in the red zone.

This is perfectly stated.
For as much grief as the Chiefs’ offense gets, it’s actually been the strength of the team for a lot of reasons. Would you say converting third downs is a big deal?
Well, nobody converts third downs at a higher rate than the Chiefs. Kansas City moves the chains on third nearly 52% of the time. The next closest team is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, at 47%.
In addition to converting on third down, I would say scoring points is pretty significant. What if I told you the Chiefs are tied for 10th in points per game at 23.7?
It’s pretty impressive that this offense can score that many points, considering they’re ranked 25th when scoring touchdowns in the red zone.
Kansas City could be in trouble without D.J. Humphries in the lineup.

I can’t say the Chiefs are in deep trouble, but it would be irresponsible to say I don’t have concerns.
Fortunately, it sounds like D.J. Humphries’ injury isn’t nearly as bad as it looked in real time. He could be back for the Houston Texans game next Saturday.
In Humphries’ first start, he did allow several pressures, but that’s to be expected for a guy who hasn’t played football in a year. I genuinely believe he’ll get better with the more reps he gets.
The Chiefs’ defense is better than you think.

If you scrolled through Chiefs X, you’d think this team has a bottom-five defense.
And look: the defense clearly has some weaknesses.
The lack of a consistent pass rush is concerning, and the second cornerback position is still a problem. However, this unit still ranked seventh in the fewest points allowed at 19.4.
I think many of the narratives are surfacing because of how dominant the unit was last year. They would never reach that level again, but that doesn’t mean this defense isn’t good enough to win a Super Bowl.
Hopefully, the addition of Steven Nelson might eventually allow Trent McDuffie to play in the slot.
The Chiefs should consider sitting starters and anyone ailing the rest of the way.

There’s zero chance the Chiefs will rest their starters against the Browns.
Although the Buffalo Bills’ loss to the Los Angeles Rams last week helped add some cushion, I wouldn’t expect this team to rest until the one seed is clinched.
I believe the No. 1 seed is more important for the Chiefs in 2024 than any other season. First, nobody has played football more than them over the last few years. Second, they had a very early bye this season.
A few weeks off before the Divisional Round could do wonders for this team.
