Patriots rookie WR sidelined by new injury

A new hurdle has popped up in Javon Baker’s quest for more playing time.

The rookie wideout has landed in the NFL’s concussion protocol. Baker participated in New England’s first practice of the week on Monday following the bye, but wasn’t present at Wednesday’s session, and will now have to clear the protocol to get back onto the field.

It’s been a challenging rookie season for the fourth-rounder, who is still looking for his first NFL catch.

Baker has only played 32 offensive snaps this year and didn’t catch the lone target thrown his way. The Patriots tried to carve out a role for him as a kickoff returner, but Baker was pulled after a pair of indecisive runbacks against the Rams, and he hasn’t been back there since.

The rookie wasn’t alone in his absence, as Marcus Jones also missed Wednesday’s practice due to an illness. Before the session, he was spotted in the locker room wearing a mask, along with a handful of other defensive teammates. There’s likely a bug going around the team right now, as Davon Godchaux and Kyle Dugger were both also spotted in masks.

Following the bye, Jerod Mayo had his team indoors for a fully-padded practice in the team’s bubble.

“We’ve got to get better, and it comes down to fundamentals,” Mayo said. “The players had a bye week. Coaches don’t really get bye weeks, so I had a couple of days that I was able to sit there and really reflect on the season up until this point. Really the goal remains the same, and that’s to play our best football at the end of the year. That’s the goal. Do we always hit the goals? No, but we’re going to do our best to hit that goal.”
