Travis Kelce admits he has a serious problem with Patrick Mahomes

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is known as one of the most reliable and explosive players in the NFL, but the 2024 season has proven to be a challenging one for the 35-year-old. After consistently being quarterback Patrick Mahomes‘ go-to target, Kelce has struggled to replicate his usual dominance this year, leading to a rare moment of self-criticism.

On Wednesday’s episode of the New Heights podcast, which Kelce co-hosts with his brother Jason Kelce, the Chiefs star opened up about his frustrations:

“Right now, for whatever reason this year, I just can’t find my way in the end zone,” Kelce admitted. “I’m just not on the same page as Pat. It can get frustrating. It can get [expletive] frustrating. That’s for damn sure.”

A drop in production

Kelce’s numbers tell the story of his uncharacteristic season. Through 12 games, he has recorded 75 receptions for 637 yards and just two touchdowns-a far cry from his 2023 campaign, where he amassed 93 receptions, 984 yards, and five touchdowns, or his stellar 2022 season, which included 1,338 yards and 12 touchdowns.

While Kelce remains a vital part of Kansas City’s offense, his struggles in the red zone-once a hallmark of his game-have been particularly glaring.

“Where I take a lot of pride is once we get in that red zone, man,” Kelce said. “I get a little hungrier.” This season, however, he has found it difficult to convert those opportunities into points.

Chiefs’ dominance continues

Despite Kelce‘s challenges, the Chiefs have maintained their status as one of the NFL’s elite teams, boasting an impressive 11-1 record. Their strong performance has been fueled by Mahomes‘ leadership and a well-rounded roster, which has been able to compensate for Kelce‘s dip in production.

With the playoffs approaching, hopes remain high that Kelce will rediscover his form in time for Kansas City’s bid for a third consecutive Super Bowl title.
