While Drake Maye suffered losses during his time at UNC, there were many more victories to count. It’s been different during his time with the New England Patriots, who fell to 3-10 after Sunday’s 25-24 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
While the rookie admitted it was frustrating to be losing so much, he sees the losses as motivational.
“It’s motivational to come back and study harder, or kind of get something (going) in small group meetings, or be with receivers more, be with the O line more, or talk through more looks, little things like that,” Maye said during his weekly appearance on WEEI. “Because we’re just few plays away from being the right side of things. And I think those guys see that. They’re not losing sight of that.”
Since taking over as New England’s starter in Week 6, Maye has continued to provide optimism as the team rebuilds. He’s made strides in his development and has shown he can be the quarterback of the future after being drafted by the Patriots third overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Maye continues to develop each week and make strides, and he’s just taking it day by day as he looks to build on what works and continue to improve on his weaknesses.
“I’m trying to learn from experiences or negative plays, and ;earn from turnovers, learn from sacks that I take and see if I get the ball out or do something better,” he said. “So that’s probably the biggest thing. … I think playing for the New England Patriots and starting quarterback is always an awesome opportunity.”
Maye was nearly flawless in New England’s latest loss that included one turnover that wasn’t on the quarterback after the football deflected off the hands of Hunter Henry. But as a rookie, it’s expected he’ll make mistakes. But what he’s shown outside of those errors has been positive and given plenty of reason to think the mistakes won’t always follow the 22-year-old.
The Patriots have a bye week and now have an opportunity to rest, reflect and come back stronger in Week 15. They’ve officially been eliminated from playoff contention, but they can still finish the 2024 campaign on a high note.
