The Kansas City Chiefs juggernaut continued to roll with a 27-20 win over the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium, with the game also setting the foundation for DeAndre Hopkins’ career with the defending champs.
Many were unsure whether the Pro Bowler would suit up for his new team after being traded from the Tennessee Titans. But Hopkins put his head down and worked to get acclimated to Andy Reid’s system and his new teammates.
Against the Raiders, Hopkins only caught two passes for 29 yards, but for Patrick Mahomes, it opened his eyes as to what the receiver is capable of.
“I thought he did a great job,” Mahomes said. “Third down, he had the big catch early in the game, then he had a couple other big plays. I missed him on the one corner route early but still got open. I know the type of player he is, but you see that on the field, it shows that he’s going to get open, and I have to give him the chances to go out there and make plays.”
Given that it would have been a baptism of fire for Hopkins in the lead-up to the Raiders game, just being on the field and getting used to the Chiefs’ way of doing things while also having two receptions in a win is a good start.
Now, DeAndre will have a full workload this week before the Chiefs welcome the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to Arrowhead Stadium.
With Juju Smith-Schuster expected to be back and Travis Kelce (10 receptions, 90 yards, one touchdown) appearing to have awoken from his early season slumber, the Chiefs’ offense has all the tools to hurt defenses.
And now we can add Hopkins, who we think will be vastly better the second time around in a Chiefs uniform.
