If you were hoping Drew Allar would be the young quarterback who would help carry the Pittsburgh Steelers to success, you’re going to be forced to practice some extraordinary patience. The latest Allar reviews are in… and they are not encouraging.

The Steelers recently wrapped up their three-day rookie minicamp, and thanks to his popularity and the nature of the position, Allar drew the biggest crowd. Videos of Allar going through footwork drills went viral, and fans’ concerns grew.

But it wasn’t just fans voicing their opinions from afar.

Steelers insider Mark Kaboly joined 93.7 The Fan on Monday to share his thoughts on what he saw from the polarizing QB at the team’s rookie minicamp. Though Kaboly noted Allar’s exceptional arm strength and rotation on the football, he was adamant that the Penn State product is nowhere near ready to play on Sundays.

“I don’t think we’re going to see Drew Allar this year… It’s going to take some time, I think,” Kaboly told Adam Crowley of 93.7 The Fan.

Crowley quickly chimed in with his thoughts on Allar, insisting that the Steelers can’t throw this kid to the wolves early in the season.

“They’re clearly tearing him down, building him up with whole new habits. You can’t throw a quarterback like that to the wolves. You just can’t. If you really think he can become something, not playing him doesn’t spit in the face of that—playing him might, because you want to give him the best possible chance to succeed.

Throwing him out there Week 1, Week 2, whatever, middle of the season, I don’t think you give him the best chance to succeed.”

Drew Allar is far from a pro-ready QB the Pittsburgh Steelers can turn to in 2026

We don’t want to overreact to some of the footage we’ve seen from Drew Allar’s rookie minicamp on social media. Allar wasn’t being asked to go through footwork drills with speed, but rather with precision.

Still, the fact that the rookie third-round pick needs to have all his mechanics reworked from the ground up is a discouraging sign that he’s not ready to see the field in game action.

This shouldn’t come as a major surprise.

When the Steelers selected Allar with the No. 76 overall pick, most of us knew how raw the Penn State product was, as his mechanics were a mess on film. Because of this, many gave Allar the ‘boom-or-bust’ label, thanks to his raw nature but impressive frame and arm talent.

While we would love nothing more than for Allar to explode from the gate and prove to be a quality option at quarterback, we need to exercise the utmost patience with this young QB. Even if Allar makes impressive strides throughout the summer at mandatory minicamp, training camp, and the preseason, it would be a stretch to believe he’ll be ready to start early in the year.

It still feels like Aaron Rodgers will be the Steelers’ quarterback in 2026. If he’s not, Pittsburgh could be forced to roll with Mason Rudolph or Will Howard early in the year.
