FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Behren Morton took advantage of each and every opportunity he had during Saturday’s rookie minicamp practice.
And with that, he was arguably the player of the day, kicking off his time with the New England Patriots in a very positive way.
Morton was selected by the Patriots with the 234th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft out of Texas Tech, joining a quarterback room with Drake Maye and Tommy DeVito. While he will often be on the field with the other two, Saturday served as a rarity as he was the lone quarterback at practice. So with that, he took all the reps during team drills, finishing by going 11-of-11 during the 11-on-11 period.
It was an opportunity he was not going to pass up.
“A lot of reps, which is really beneficial right now,” Morton said after practice. “And then, when we start Monday, reps will go down… A lot of cool stuff in this offense, and I’m really excited to learn.”

Drake Maye is the Patriots’ starting quarterback. Nobody is touching his roster spot. However, the team released Joshua Dobbs this offseason, who served as Maye’s backup in 2025. And instead, they extended Tommy DeVito, who moved into that No. 2 role.
But Morton’s impressive day on Saturday could make for a fun position battle to keep an eye on this summer. He didn’t throw an interception during his time in team drills, making impressive throws with his top target being UDFA wide receiver Kyle Dixon.
And with that, Morton said he’s the healthiest he’s been in a while, having dealt with shoulder and leg injuries during his career.
“My shoulder hasn’t been this good since high school,” he explained. “It feels great to just go out there and be healthy and actually focus on football and not how your body’s feeling.”

Being in New England and working with Josh McDaniels, it’s no surprise that the rookie quarterback is becoming familiar with another legendary signal caller who called Foxborough his home for 20 seasons.
When speaking with reporters, Morton mentioned that he has been watching Tom Brady’s film.
“But learning from (watching) Tom Brady and the guys that have played in this offense, it’s really cool to see the film that I get to watch,” he admitted, and was also asked about what he learned from watching Brady.
“I’m just trying to maximize my opportunity,” Morton added. “For guys that have played in a lot of Super Bowls, this has been very successful in the league. And so just being a sponge, asking questions. It’s not going to come overnight.”
The rookie also has a connection to Maye, having been in the same class as the star quarterback coming out of high school.
“He’s a phenomenal player,” Morton said of Maye. “To get the opportunity to learn from him, I’m going to take every opportunity I can to maximize what he’s doing and take that in.”
