Fans make predictions about today's Giants-Cowboys game - Hogs Haven

SB Nation’s Reacts surveys include both questions asked here on the Hogs Haven website (and other team sites like it) and those sent to registered participants from all 32 NFL fanbases via email. The email surveys, sent weekly during the regular season, typically ask fans to predict the outcome of every game of the week adjusted for a point spread.

In this week’s national survey, 82% of respondents from the 32 fan bases picked the Cowboys to cover the spread against the Giants in today’s game kicking off at 4:20 p.m.

This outcome would seemingly be welcome by Cowboys fans. After all, a win against the Giants to reach 5-7 would keep them within shouting distance of the NFC playoff 7th seed with 5 games left to play.

Yet, Cowboys fans seem more interested in draft position at the moment.

In a survey of Cowboys fans on Blogging the Boys this week, two-thirds of respondents claimed to prefer to see the team tank than to win games. This is a mindset I have never understood, but one with which I am familiar since a similar conversation took place here on Hogs Haven a year ago (and in other recent seasons).

The Giants, per tankathon.com, currently hold the second overall pick in the draft, and, having just released Daniel Jones, will be in the market for a quarterback in the coming offseason. The top candidates in the upcoming draft seem, at the moment, to be Cameron Ward (Miami), Jalen Milroe (Alabama), and Shedeur Sanders (Colorado). If the Giants keep losing, they are likely to be in a strong position to choose the quarterback they want — especially if the Jaguars, who currently hold the top pick in the draft, finish the regular season in that position and feel that they are content to continue moving forward with Trevor Lawrence.

If Giants fans have their wish, GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll will not be the ones making that 2025 draft pick.

In a survey of Giants fans on Big Blue View this week, more than half of those surveyed wanted to fire both Daboll and Schoen, while a further 12% wanted the head coach gone and 8% wanted to dump the GM. The Mara family will have a lot of decisions to make between now and early-January.

In the other game this weekend involving an NFC East rival, fans in the national survey were fairly closely split in predicting the outcome of the Eagles-Ravens game with the Ravens giving up 2.5 points.

When the majority of fans take points and pick the underdog, it’s a bit harder to know which team they think will win the game on the scoreboard.

However, here at Hogs Haven, we run a weekly Pick’em contest. In that Pick’em contest (not adjusted for point spreads), 71% of entrants picked the Ravens to beat the Eagles outright, while 87% picked the Cowboys to beat the Giants outright.

The 9-2 Eagles, of course, are firmly in first place in the NFC East, and, with a win on Sunday, can retain hope of earning the #1 seed in the NFC over the (currently) 10-1 Lions. A loss to the Ravens, though, would probably end that hope.

A loss by the Giants today in Dallas would probably help crystalize the direction of the New York franchise as being in full rebuild mode yet again — a state that has seemed almost constant since Tom Coughlin was fired at the end of the 2015 season.

A win by the Cowboys might serve to muddy the waters a bit for Cowboys fans. With back-to-back division wins and a shot at a record above .500, a team that most people left for dead a week ago could find itself in a no-man’s land of playing for potentially meaningless wins earned under a lame duck head coach with a limited roster loaded with wounded players.

As seems to always be true, things are not dull in the NFC East.
