Change is indeed coming to the Patriots offensive line.

New England cut starting left guard Michael Jordan on Tuesday afternoon and claimed Lester Cotton, another guard, off waivers from the Dolphins. One of the only near constants on the offensive line this season, Jordan had started 11 games, and only Michael Onwenu had played more snaps for the Patriots offense this season. Jordan’s play had slipped precipitously over the past few games though, and an inability to pick up defensive line stunts in the pass rush became a weekly occurrence.

With Jordan heading to waivers, the Patriots could give fourth-rounder Layden Robinson a crack there, or add Cole Strange back into the mix. Robinson seems the more likely of the two this weekend, as Strange is still working his way back from a torn patellar tendon and has been working to learn center. Robinson began the season playing right guard, but he’s been repping at both spots on the practice field, according to offensive line coach Scott Peters.

“If you’re not in the starting lineup, you have to be able to play multiple positions,” Peters said. “With Layden, as a rookie, you wanna try to isolate him a little bit where he can learn and grow at one spot but again, if you’re up and active for the game, you have to be able to play multiple spots. So, he’s been worked in at multiple spots – left guard as well. He’s improving as well.”

As for Cotton, he’s a 28-year-old veteran with 43 games and nine starts on his NFL resume. An undrafted free agent out of Alabama in 2019, Cotton stands 6-foot-3 and weighs in at 330 pounds. He spent the first three seasons of his career with the Raiders and then landed in Miami. Cotton appeared in all 17 games for the Dolphins last season, starting eight, but only played a reserve role this season. He was cut earlier this week.

On Tuesday morning, Jerod Mayo was asked if there would be any drastic changes to the offensive line following an abysmal performance in Miami.

“That’s a fair question,” Mayo replied. “The one thing that we’ve talked about all year is trying to build continuity up front, letting those guys grow together as well as grow with the starting quarterback and the receivers as well. That’s always been my mindset.”

It’ll be interesting to see if Jordan is the only starter that isn’t back out there for a Week 13 date with the Colts. Right tackle Demontrey Jacobs was benched for Sidy Sow against the Dolphins, while left tackle Vederian Lowe picked up four penalties and allowed a strip sack.
