The New England Patriots have been connected to Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown over the course of the offseason. Speculation grew on Wednesday, when Patriots coach Mike Vrabel was asked about Brown and the relationship he has with the wide receiver. Now, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman is not necessarily shutting the door on things either.
Brown was very public about his dissatisfaction with the Eagles last season. He expressed frustration in mid-November about the Eagles’ offense publicly. On top of this, he did not speak to the media after the Eagles’ Wild Card loss to the San Francisco 49ers in January. He was seen getting into an argument with head coach Nick Sirianni during the game. This undoubtedly fueled speculation that Brown would not be in an Eagles uniform following the season.
Roseman Speaks On Potential Patriots Target
Roseman’s comments on Wednesday did not exactly end the speculation. He spoke with Pro Football Focus earlier in the day and indicated they would be willing to listen to all offers.
“Part of our job, as a general manager in the National Football League, is to listen. To listen to what people are willing to do… I don’t want to not listen to anyone calling me on anything.”
These comments are certainly interesting. Vrabel indicated that the Patriots would look at any way they could to improve the roster. It sounds like Roseman is open to listening to potential deals for his wide receiver. If anything, it sounds like the Eagles and Patriots organizations are on the same page regarding an open-door acquisition policy.
Brown would certainly fit what the Patriots need. He would give them a dynamic playmaker and another top option for quarterback Drake Maye to throw to. The Patriots were able to get solid production out of Stefon Diggs as he was the first 1,000-yard receiver for the Patriots since Julian Edelman in 2019. Brown is 28 years old, and would be a solid option for the Patriots in terms of being able to grow with the rest of the offense.
Brown-Patriots Buzz Has Been Growing
The buzz has been nonstop about Brown over the past couple of weeks. He did not exactly say no about a potential Patriots acquisition on the Dudes on Dudes podcast. The receiver’s relationship with Vrabel was made clear again on Wednesday. It seems as though both the Patriots and Eagles would like to get a deal done in some capacity.
Now of course, the question is: What will it take to get a deal done? It’s abundantly clear that the Eagles are willing to listen. The price point is perhaps the biggest obstacle here. It feels as though both the Patriots and Eagles are feeling each other out for negotiations regarding a potential deal. The Patriots have additional leverage this offseason with a Super Bowl run under their belts. Brown could be the missing piece to elevate them to get that victory.
Now, it is just about finding out what it will take. Both sides have been saying quite a bit, without explicitly referring to Brown. It will be interesting to see if the Patriots can make any additional headway this week.
