Packers Linked to Bringing in Former Bears Starting Quarterback

Packers Linked to Bringing in Former Bears Starting Quarterback

Entering the 2026 NFL offseason, the Green Bay Packers are likely going to need a new backup quarterback.

Malik Willis is a free agent, and he’s a highly sought-after free agent, at that. He’s expected to be signed to a lucrative contract to be a team’s new starting quarterback. That would leave a hole behind Jordan Love.

Over the last two years, Willis has been an elite backup for the Packers. He has been called upon to make key starts in both seasons with the team.

Assuming Green Bay doesn’t pull off a miracle and bring Willis back, there are a few options to keep an eye on as potential replacements. Justin Fields has now entered the mix of potential backup options for the Packers.

Green Bay Packers Could Acquire Justin Fields This Offseason

The New York Jets are widely expected to cut Fields this offseason. He was signed to a two-year, $40 million contract last year, but things didn’t work out between the two parties.

If he does become an option in free agency, there is speculation that Green Bay could make sense as a destination for him.

David Haugh of the “Mully and Haugh” show was the one who connected the dots between Fields and the Packers.

“Speaking of quarterbacks, Justin Fields is on the open market,” Haugh said. “One of the rumors around the league is that he’s going to Green Bay because Luke Getsy is the quarterbacks coach there, so that would add a little bit of a nice little layer to the very interesting and really fun Bears-Packers rivalry.”

Fields, who was previously drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 2021 NFL Draft with the No. 11 overall pick, would be an intriguing option for Green Bay. He has yet to find his stride in the NFL, but playing under head coach Matt LaFleur could do him well.

Throughout his 59-game career, Fields has completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 9,039 yards, 52 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions, while also running for 2,892 yards and 23 touchdowns.

The Packers-Bears Rivalry Could Get Even More Intriguing

Last season, the hatred between the Packers and Bears was clear. They had three great matchups against each other, with the last coming in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.

Unfortunately for Green Bay, the Packers blew a 21-3 halftime lead in that Wild Card game and were eliminated.

Adding Fields to the mix would simply add more fuel to the rivalry. Fields was supposed to be the franchise quarterback Chicago desperately needed to find. Heading to the bitter rivals to revitalize his career wouldn’t make the Bears’ fan base very happy.

At the end of the day, this is speculation. Fields has not been officially reported to have interest from Green Bay. However, it’s an option that would make a ton of sense for the Packers as they search to replace Willis.
