Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Flacco is from a different era.
No disrespect: He’s had incredible staying power, hence his coming over via trade last year while Joe Burrow was hurt and keeping the Bengals alive.
But that comes with some insightful commentary that isn’t necessarily prevalent with today’s generation of players.
Flacco’s comments about the NFL around this year’s Super Bowl illustrate that point well.
“[G]uys can’t even play defense as aggressively because they’re getting fined so much money for just normal hits,” Flacco said during an interview with Kevin Clark. “It’s changed the game a lot. And I don’t think we’re going back, so I’m just kind of ranting here. But, man, I don’t like it.”
I asked Joe Flacco if the NFL has a quarterback development problem and he launched an impassioned take on how personal calls have changed games and hurt the position and sport.
"We signed up to get hurt, you might not like that but it's what we kinda did." Watch: pic.twitter.com/51fkGnMnGY

Flacco added this: “Listen, we signed up to get concussions. We signed up to get hurt. It is what it is. You might not like that, but that’s what we kind of did when we decided to play this game.”
Usually, this sort of talk comes from a retired guy like Tom Brady. Not to say it’s wrong, either, but that seems to be the trend.
Flacco, of course, intends to keep playing. And the Bengals want him back. Provided another team in free agency doesn’t offer him an outright starting job, there’s a chance he’ll be signing up for it all again in Cincinnati.
