Travis Kelce’s next move is one of the biggest storylines in Kansas City right now. After the Chiefs finished a disappointing 6–11 season and missed the playoffs, talk about Kelce possibly retiring picked up quickly.

He has hinted at thinking about his future, but he has not made any official decision about stepping away from football. Instead of retirement, there is now growing belief that Kelce could return for one more season. The idea of a short term deal has started to gain traction as both sides try to figure out what makes sense.

Travis Kelce projected to sign one year deal as Chiefs manage salary cap pressure

ML Football shared a projection that caught attention across the league. The post on X read, “PROJECTION: Legendary #Chiefs star TE Travis Kelce is projected to sign a new 1-YEAR, $8 MILLION CONTRACT.

Kelce is an impending free agent but is expected to return and not retire. Travis is a 3x Super Bowl Champion and 10x Pro Bowler. Would be a pay cut for his final run.”Kelce’s previous two-year extension worth $34.25 million expired last season, which means he is currently a free agent. The 2026 NFL season begins on March 12, so the Chiefs need to settle his situation before then if he is going to stay.According to NFL.com, Kansas City hopes to bring him back and planned to reconnect after the Super Bowl to work out a deal that fits both sides.

The biggest issue is money. The Chiefs are more than $50 million over the projected $300 million salary cap. While teams can restructure contracts and adjust deals, it takes time to balance the books. That makes a one-year contract at a lower number realistic, especially if Kelce wants one more run with Patrick Mahomes.

He recently celebrated offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s return, which could also play a role in his thinking. Travis Kelce has spoken about his future on his New Heights podcast and in short interviews, but he has not committed either way. For now, nothing is official. Chiefs fans are waiting. Whether this ends with a farewell or one final season, the decision will shape Kansas City’s 2026 outlook.

On the personal front, the tight end is engaged to Taylor Swift and is rumoured to be married this year.
