The Cowboys just got the coach they needed to fix one of the team’s biggest weaknesses

Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker is cooking with fire as he continues to build his very own defensive staff. And the most recent hire is another example of it.

That’s because he’s adding someone who is much more than just a position coach. He’s a National Championship-winning coach who is considered a rising star and that has developed a lot of NFL talent while at Georgia and other universities. Let’s dive in.\

Cowboys hire new OLB coach

The Cowboys announced Wednesday they officially hired Chidera Uzo-Diribe, who previously coached the same position with the Georgia Bulldogs, as their new outside linebackers coach. Important disclaimer: In this context, outside linebackers means pretty much the same as edge rushers. As defenses continue to lean toward hybrid defensive fronts, an outside linebacker is pretty much the same as a defensive end in a four-man front defense.

As a former player himself, Uzo-Diribe has led some very productive units and sent players to the pros. At 33 years old, he now joins the NFL’s ranks looking to do the same.

And boy, do the Cowboys need him to. Since trading away Micah Parsons, the Cowboys’ pass rush hasn’t been the same in the edges. Though coverage was mediocre at best in 2025, the lack of QB pressure didn’t help one bit. Uzo-Diribe will get to work with Donovan Ezeiruaku, who had a promising rookie year in 2025 but still needs to get better.

Uzo-Diribe has maximized talents everywhere

So what can the Cowboys expect from Uzo-Diribe? I reached out to our very own Travis May, who leads our college football content and closely follows Georgia for his insight. It will please Cowboys fans to learn that May describes Uzo-Diribe as someone who has “maximized the talents he was asked to work with at every stop.”

May: “Chidera Uzo-Diribe has been considered a fast-rising, impressive young mind in the college football coaching community for some time. A former defensive lineman and edge defender himself (for Colorado, 2010-2013), Uzo-Diribe has spent his entire coaching career focusing on those position groups. He’ll do that now for the Cowboys, hopefully helping Dallas find their pass rush again.

“Uzo-Diribe quickly went from being a graduate assistant at Colorado in 2018 to Kansas, SMU, TCU briefly, and then on to the Georgia Bulldogs where he would win the 2022-2023 College Football National Championship with Kirby Smart and company. Why the meteoric rise? He maximized the talents he was asked to work with immediately at every stop.

“He quickly turned around a sorry Kansas Jayhawks defensive front. Then he helped three undrafted free agent level talents at SMU tally 5+ sacks in 2021. Then, of course, he helped develop Nolan Smith, Mykell Williams, and Jalon Walker at Georgia (all first round picks). The Cowboys landed a potential game-changer for their defensive staff in Uzo-Diribe.”
