Sometimes it’s not easy to be successful. In the case of the Green Bay Packers, their success and strong development of a coaching staff meant they had to hit the open market. With Jeff Hartley now the head coach of the Miami Dolphins, the Packers had to replace him.
It’s been a crazy coaching market across the NFL this offseason, and teams are forced to move quickly. While there are still other candidates out there, and it’s possible they would have been available, the Packers acted quickly.
If you find a prospective coach you like, the prudent move is to lock them up.
Jonathan Gannon Hired

And that’s just what Green Bay did as they hired Jonathan Gannon to be their new defensive coordinator. Talk about a fresh start for the formerly embattled Arizona Cardinals head coach.
By no means is this to suggest that Gannon wasn’t, or will never be, cut out to be a head coach. It’s not an easy job. There are many variables as to why things went off the rails for Gannon in Arizona, but it’s hard not to point long and hard at Kyler Murray.
That might be the best thing for Gannon in Green Bay. He doesn’t have to worry about Murray, an injury to James Conner, or an underperforming Marvin Harrison. In fact, Gannon just saw his workload reduced by more than 50%.

Now he just has to focus on the defense. And we know that Gannon is good at that. After all, he won a Super Bowl when he was previously in this role with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Gannon had the Eagles in the top-10 in the league defensively in back-to-back seasons. In his last year with the Eagles, 2022, they were second in total defense. It’s not surprising that he parlayed that into the head coaching job with the Cardinals.
Gannon should be refreshed now to just focus on the defense. He also knows what it takes to get things done, and having Micah Parsons as a cheat code certainly works.
