Cowboys cut ties with three defensive coaches after disastrous season

The Dallas Cowboys have announced the departure of multiple defensive coaches amid a complete staff shake-up, led by the hire of Christian Parker as the new defensive coordinator.

Parker comes from the Philadelphia Eagles, replacing Matt Eberflus in the role after interviewing nine candidates.

Now, Parker is bringing in his own people into the field, which requires the departure of former staff.

Defensive line coach Aaron Whitecotton, who interviewed with the Tennessee Titans for the same role, has taken the job with the Titans, leaving after one year in Dallas.

Also, the Cowboys have decided to move on from three coaches who oversaw position groups — secondary/cornerbacks coach David Overstreet, defensive pass game coordinator Andre Curtis, and linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi.

All three coaches served only one season before being let go, as the Cowboys chose to turn over the team after a poor defensive campaign.

Parker has already started interviewing candidates for these openings, as well as others on his staff, as he hopes to turn around the defense quickly.

How can the Cowboys improve the defense?

While the Cowboys failed to live up to expectations, their weaknesses are clear to anyone watching — they need help at all three levels of the defense, requiring young talent and veteran experience to make a drastic turnaround.

Luckily, the Cowboys can create $100 million in cap space with some creative contract solutions, and they have a good deal of draft capital from the Micah Parsons deal.

Additionally, there is plenty of young talent in Dallas that should be able to develop with another year under their belts. Parker should get a good deal of new tools for 2026, adding depth and new starters all over the defensive front and pass coverage as well.

Will new defensive coordinator Christian Parker deliver a turnaround?

At just 34 years old, Parker has impressed as a coach for a while now, getting NFL circles talking about him as the next great coordinator.

He comes from the Philadelphia Eagles, though he is well-travelled, spending time with Notre Dame and Texas A&M, then the Green Bay Packers and Denver Broncos.

While he is inexperienced, Parker should bring new ideas to the table, successful ones at that, since the Eagles have seen much success during his time with the Cowboys’ rivals.
