In a move that didn’t surprise anyone, the Detroit Lions parted ways with offensive coordinator John Morton after only a single season in which his play calling duties were taken away midway through the campaign.
They’ve since hired former Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, a move that naturally has some fans asking questions. However, Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown decided to take things to a new level of condescension toward elements in the fan base who didn’t immediately give their 100 percent stamp of approval to the hiring.
“I see crazy Lions fans talking crazy, like, ‘Oh, why would we do this?’ Bro, do you guys have no trust in Dan, in the Lions? You think they would just hire a random dude? Be for real,” St. Brown said on his podcast, the “St. Brown Podcast,” which also features his brother Equanimeous as a co-host.
“You think they don’t know what they’re doing? They don’t do their research? They don’t interview? Most of you guys don’t know really much about anything, about any ball,” St. Brown continued. “And you’re tweeting about a coach that was hired that you guys don’t like because of X, Y, Z. It’s just funny to me to see.
Don’t get me wrong, I love all Lions fans. But they are so quick to make judgments about who we hired. … Bro, just relax. Calm down, let the whole thing play out. Let it play out, just relax. That’s all I’ve got to say: Relax, man. Relax.”
Understandably, St. Brown’s comments weren’t exactly well received by many in the Lions fan base.
“Sit this out Amon Ra…. you were never a lions fan before the draft bucko,” one fan said.
This fan responded, “I mean his last OC was taken away play call duties half way through the year and fired at the end of the season so there is reason to be skeptical.”
“He fired Morton before 1/2 a season…I’d say we have the right to question. Especially after ownership jacks up the season tix by 20%,” another fan commented.
Finally, this fan responded, “Come on Amon-ra. They just hired a guy last year that didn’t work out. Let’s not pretend they are above criticism.”

Detroit Lions Fans Have Every Right To Question Team Hires
In the first place, St. Brown appeared to have forgotten past mistakes by the Lions coaching staff, who hired both Anthony Lynn and John Morton, either of whom lasted longer than a single season on the sidelines under Dan Campbell.
In fact, Lynn’s record of 3-13-1 officially ranks him as the third-least successful offensive coordinator in Lions team history.
Additionally, while it wouldn’t be right to pan a hiring by the club before he’s even had the chance to coach the players in Training Camp, there is going to be a natural skepticism from fans who feel like they’ve seen this movie before.
Going after fans and accusing them “not knowing ball” is the polar opposite attitude that should be displayed by one of the team captains of a franchise who not only missed the playoffs this season, but has a total of five playoff victories since 1957 with zero Super Bowl appearances.
