Kansas City ChiefsĀ OC Matt NagyĀ seems destined to leave the organization, whether he gets a head-coaching job or not. As things currently stand, though, heās closer than ever before to his second head-coaching opportunity after flaming out with theĀ Chicago Bears.
Nagy has interviewed with theĀ Baltimore Ravens,Ā Las Vegas Raiders,Ā Arizona Cardinals, andĀ Tennessee Titans. The latter of which, heās a presumptive favorite because of his relationship with former Chiefs assistant GM Mike Borgonzi,Ā who is now running the show in Tennessee.
With the latest update, thereās an even clearer indication that Nagy is viewed as a favorite to land the Titansā job.
Chiefs OC Matt Nagy set to get an in-person interview with the Tennessee Titans brass
As reported by NFL insidersĀ Ian Rapoport,Ā Jordan Schultz, andĀ Dianna Russini, Chiefs OC Matt Nagy will have a second interview with the Titans. Rapoport indicated that this round of interviews will be conducted in-person. This is the first news that Nagy will get a second-round interview for any of the four vacancies for which he has interviewed. What also matters here is the other candidates slated for second-round interviews with Tennessee.
The other two candidates slated for interviews areĀ Green Bay PackersĀ DC Jeff Hafley & formerĀ Cleveland BrownsĀ head coach Kevin Stefanski. Hafley is currently viewed as a favorite to land theĀ Miami DolphinsĀ job,Ā following GM Jon-Eric SullivanĀ from Green Bay. Schultz indicated that Hafley is viewed as a favorite for virtually every job heās interviewed for. Similarly, theĀ Atlanta FalconsĀ seem to have a sense of urgency to lock down Stefanski, according to Rapoport.
So what does this all mean for Nagy? Well, itās entirely possible that neither Hafley nor Stefanski makes it to a second interview. Thatād leave a clear path for Nagy or formerĀ Dallas CowboysĀ and Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy,Ā who has already had a second interview.
With the John Harbaugh domino falling in New York, other teams are looking to wrap up their head-coaching searches. That could leave a team like the Titans scrambling if several of their finalists come off the board before they can even get a second-round interview. Thereās a chance they wait for more candidates to become available as the playoffs wind down, but Chiefs fans know all too well that NFL clubs simply arenāt that patient.
