Officials and coaches had to separate players from the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers on Sunday during a pregame altercation.

As both teams prepared to make their way off the field ahead of the Lambeau Field matchup, players from the Packers and Niners started jawing at one another. The impetus of the confrontation wasn’t clear, as videos on social media only showed what happened as the two teams got face-to-face with one another.

The most animated players on San Francisco’s side were the usual suspects: Deebo Samuel and Deommodore Lenoir, two of the feistiest Niners, who were bouncing up and down the whole time. Samuel himself is no stranger to getting into it with other players, regardless of what team they’re on. The most animated Packers were cornerbacks Eric Stokes and Carrington Valentine.

Video from Bay Area News Group’s Cam Inman showed the 49ers huddle shortly after the confrontation and then head into the locker room.

It’s certainly not ideal to expend necessary energy early, but if there was a game where the 49ers need to show more fight than ever, it’s this Sunday duel. The team is without quarterback Brock Purdy, All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams, star edge rusher Nick Bosa and cornerback Charvarious Ward. The expectations heading into this afternoon after the devastating loss to Seattle last week were already low, but they only got lower as the week, and tough injury news, continued.

This is to say, the Niners need any boost they can get. If that means starting something silly before a pivotal away game, then, for the sake of their dwindling postseason aspirations, so be it.\
