The Chiefs’ offense struggled throughout the 2025 season, even before Patrick Mahomes went down with a torn ACL. They finished 20th in yards per game and totaled just 38 touchdowns all season. A big part of the issue was that Mahomes had no consistently reliable targets throughout the season. However, they can address that by making a trade with the reigning AFC North champions.

The Chiefs should trade for Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth

Pat Freiermuth had a down season. He caught just 41 passes, which is a career-low when playing either 16 or 17 games. He also only played in 51 percent of snaps despite being one of the NFL’s highest-paid tight ends. On locker room cleanout day, Freiermuth admitted he was frustrated with his role in the offense.

“I would say that I am disappointed with the lack of opportunities I was given,” Freiermuth said via Chris Adamski. “But, at the end of the day, I’m a team player. I was proud of myself for not making it about myself. It’s always about the team and what we can do to win. I feel like I could have been in situations where I could help the team win.”

Perhaps the next regime in Pittsburgh will make better use of Freiermuth. Or, maybe the former second-round pick would welcome a change of scenery. After all, it looks like the Steelers will have yet another new Week 1 starter – which would mark the sixth straight season a new signal-caller was under center.

Considering the uncertainty, both short and long-term surrounding Travis Kelce, acquiring Freiermuth would give the Chiefs a go-to safety blanket at tight end. If Freiermuth does want a fresh start, Kansas City should be on the phone with Omar Khan to make it happen.
