The Dallas Cowboys’ 2025 season certainly didn’t go as well as anyone in the organization hoped it would, as America’s Team ended the campaign at 7-9-1, thus giving the franchise back-to-back losing seasons for the first time since suffering three consecutive 5-11 finishes from 2000 to 2002.

Of course, Jerry Jones trading away one of the best defensive players in the entire NFL in Micah Parsons one week ahead of the regular season obviously didn’t help matters, as the Dallas defense went on to be one of the worst units in the league (and in team history), ranking 30th in total yards allowed (377.0) and dead last in points allowed (30.1) per game. Not all of that can be pinned on Parsons’ absence, as defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus continued to run bad scheme after bad scheme when they clearly weren’t working, which ultimately cost him his job.

The Cowboys’ offense, on the other hand, was one of the best in the league, ranking second in total yards gained per game (391.9) and seventh in scoring. The issue moving forward, however, is that two of the biggest pieces of that offensive attack are set to become unrestricted free agents, that pair being Pro Bowl wideout George Pickens, who led the team in every major receiving category with 93 catches for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns and resurgent running back Javonte Williams, who posted a career-high 1,201 rushing yards and a career-best 11 touchdowns.

There are four additional offensive players set to hit unrestricted free agency, and they’ll be joined by nine players from the defensive side of the ball, a list that includes team sack leader Jadeveon Clowney, Dante Fowler Jr., Donovan Wilson, and Kenneth Murray.

The Cowboys also have four restricted free agents, including kicker Brandon Aubrey, and a pair of exclusive rights free agents in cornerbacks Reddy Steward and Josh Butler.

So, there are certainly a lot of decisions to be made before the new League Year begins on March 11. Of course, it needs to be noted that re-signing (or tagging) any of these players or signing any external free agents (which certainly needs to be done) could prove tricky, as Dallas is currently projected by Over The Cap to be more than $40 million over the 2026 cap figure, and that doesn’t even include the money the Joneses will need to pay the team’s draft picks, which will include two first-rounders.

But it also needs to be noted that contracts can be restructured and players can be released to create more cap space. And one would assume the Cowboys already have plans to do both. So, we now just wait to see how everything plays out.
