Yes, Malik Willis has been impressive stepping in as the Green Bay Packers quarterback. No, it’s not nearly enough for head coach Matt LaFleur to consider a change. Jordan Love is the franchise player, he’s playing at an extremely high level this year, and he will start when healthy.
“Jordan Love is playing some pretty high-level football, and it’s great that we feel the same about Malik and his ability to go in there,” LaFleur said on Sunday. “I thought he had two back-to-back outstanding performances, so we’re in a good spot at that position. I certainly have a lot of confidence in both of those guys, but it’s pretty clear that Jordan is our franchise quarterback, and when he is healthy, he’s going to be our starter. I just want to squash all that.”
Jordan Love is the best option
Willis adds an interesting element to the offense with his running ability. But Love gives the passing offense much more — he’s a better reader of defenses and an overall more efficient passer. When Love is on the field, defenses are forced to open the box more frequently, opening up more space for the running game, even if Love himself isn’t a great runner.
“Well, I think his body of work throughout the course of three years, especially this season, shows that he’s taken his game to another level,” LaFleur added. “That’s not to discount anything. We have a lot of faith and confidence in Malik, and he’s done a lot of great things. That’s a good problem when you have two guys you’re really confident in.”
Now, it’s still unclear if Jordan Love will play next week against the Minnesota Vikings in the regular season finale. Even if Love clears the concussion protocol, the Packers will determine later in the week if they will sit starters or not.
The Packers have already locked in the seventh seed in the NFC, so the Vikings game won’t mean anything. Because of that, it makes sense to rest some key players — especially considering Love is coming back from a concussion.
