Deshaun Watson took to social media with a message after the Cleveland Browns decided not to add him to the 53-man roster.
Watson started to practice with the Browns earlier this month and his 21-day window to be activated closed on Tuesday. The decision means Watson will be unable to continue practicing with the team but can work individually inside the facility as he continues his path back to the field. Watson will convert to the reserve/PUP list for the remainder of the season.
“He’s done a great job with everything that’s been asked of him. I’ve gotten to see him just work so hard, whether it’s in the training room, by himself in the indoor with the trainers, on the practice field now for the last bit,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said. “But just felt like this was the right decision for him and for us, and his focus will continue to be to help this football team and continue to get healthy and get stronger and all those types of things.”
Watson has not spoken with the media since returning to practice. However, he did send a clear message on social media about his future after the decision.
“Credits haven’t rolled.. my story is still being written. MoreGLORY!” Watson wrote, along with clips of him working out in the facility.
Browns QB Deshaun Watson Could be ‘Bridge’
There’s a chance Watson will have a significant role with the Browns next season. Cleveland is still unsettled on their quarterback plans and Watson could serve as a veteran bridge option for a new rookie, or even Shedeur Sanders.
“I do believe he’ll be on the roster, in part because of the salary cap considerations,” Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot said on 92.3 The Fan. “He’ll be on the team next year and he will have the chance to start games at the beginning of the season as a bridge quarterback in the event that they need a veteran to do that.
“If they stick with Shedeur and feel like he needs a little more seasoning, maybe they let Deshaun start a few games and let Shedeur continue to learn whatever he needs to learn to go out there and win. Or if they draft a quarterback in April and don’t feel he’s ready yet, there’s a world where Deshaun starts in place of him. He will be here, and as long as he’s healthy, he’ll have that chance.”
That’s not something that has many Browns fans excited. Watson has disappointed mainly since arriving via a 2022 blockbuster trade. He’s gone 9-10 as the starter, passing for 3,365 yards, 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Browns QB Shedeur Sanders Focused on Present
A lot has been made of Sanders’ future with the Browns. He’s gone 1-4 as the starter and has had his ups and downs. In all, Sanders has passed for 1,103 yards, six touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Sanders is not looking too far ahead when it comes to his future, taking things week by week.
“I live in the present. I’m focused on this week because nothing’s promised going into next year or anything.” Sanders said ahead of Week 17. “I don’t think it’s about feeling a commitment. It’s about controlling what you can control. I think I have to do my part and get some wins and play clean football.”
Cleveland is currently a three-point home underdog against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
