The Kansas City Chiefs dynasty may be on pause, but if head coach Andy Reid has anything to say about it, it’s not over.
With the Chiefs eliminated from playoff contention, there have been questions about whether Reid – who is finishing his 27th season as an NFL head coach and has been in the coaching industry for over 40 years – is ready to hang up his headset and call it career. But that doesn’t appear to be the case quite yet, as the news broke on Sunday that Reid has decided to forego retirement and return to the franchise next year. Reid signed an extension with the Chiefs in April 2024 that would keep him with the franchise until 2029.
The Chiefs head coach has been in Kansas City since the 2013 season, and has led the franchise to the postseason in 11 of the past 12 seasons prior to 2025, as three Super Bowl Championships. He has achieved a record of the 149-60, during his tenure with the Chiefs, and a career record of 279-153 including his 13 season stint with the Eagles which saw him lead the franchise to nine playoff appearances.
The news broke ahead of things getting worse for the Chiefs in an already disappointing season, as they lost to the Titans 26-9 on Sunday and dropped to 6-9 overall. They also lost backup quarterback Gardner Minshew to an ACL injury during the game just one week after starter Patrick Mahomes saw his season end due to the same injury. Now, Reid will look to find ways to get his team to rally to close the season before regrouping for at least one more season at the helm.
