Myles Garrett’s chase to break the single-season sack record will remain.
In the Cleveland Browns‘ 23-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Garrett was credited with 0.5 sacks to put him at 22 on the season. Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt hold the record with 22.5 sacks in a season, as Garrett needs one sack to break the record.
Yet, Garrett wasn’t able to break the record at home against the Bills, and the superstar pass rusher admits he was disappointed.
“A bit. For my family. I wanted to get it for them, have some family show up,” Garrett said postgame on Sunday. “They felt like it was going to be the game in the moment, and so definitely want to give them something to smile about. For me, I always keep the main thing, the main thing. I want to win.
“It’s a close game, we were a little bit too lax in the run, a little step behind and not as physical as we needed to be, so that’s the stuff I think about. The record’s great, but the team record is what keeps me up at night. The sack record, it’ll be there.”
As Garrett said, his focus during the game is on helping Cleveland win the game, which they weren’t able to do. So, it’s a disappointing game for Garrett, who will look to break the record on Sunday on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Browns Coach Opens up on Garrett Not Breaking Sack Record
Garrett had a chance to break the record at home on Sunday, but he fell short.
Bills quarterback Josh Allen did a good job escaping pressure and avoiding being sacked. Yet, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski admitted he was disappointed Garrett wasn’t able to break the record
‘Yeah,” Stefanski said when asked if he was disappointed Garrett didn’t break the record. “I think the record and we talked, have talked a lot about it, we don’t talk a lot about it, when we’re in the building, and we’re getting ready to play, that’s really not our focus.
“It’s not Myles’ focus. You guys have talked to him at length about this. He’s trying to just play good football to help the team win.”
Garrett still has two more games to break the record, but breaking it in 16 games is likely the goal.
Garrett Details His Play to Get a 0.5 Sack
Although Garrett didn’t break the single-season sack record on Sunday, he did make an impact.
Garrett played well against the run, and the play he got credited for half a sack, the star pass rusher knew he was making a difference.
“I wanted to get another regardless,” Garrett said. “I felt like that was a big play in the game and we were gonna march down and get some points and I was happy about that. But whether Mason (Graham) got it or I got it, that didn’t bother me. It was just the fact that the play was made. I was proud of him for being there at the right time, so just needed more.”
Garrett, meanwhile, praised Allen for his ability to get rid of the ball when he saw him coming.
“I saw his eyes get big when he saw me, so I knew he recognized who it was,” Garrett concluded. “So, he started to hightail the other way, and then he slipped, and then I slipped. So, I was thinking this could be the one to tie it, but ended up just a half.”
