With quarterback Patrick Mahomes going down with a season-ending knee injury in their previous game, the Kansas City Chiefs signed former Samford signal-caller Chris Oladokun from their practice squad to their active roster on Saturday.

Oladokun will serve as the backup for Gardner Minshew when Kansas City plays the Tennessee Titans at noon CST Sunday at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.

Oladokun is in his fourth season on the Chiefs’ practice squad. He has played in one NFL regular-season game but has won two Super Bowl rings.

Oladokun entered the NFL as a seventh-round draft choice of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022. Buried on the depth chart behind veterans Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph and 2022 first-round draft pick Kenny Pickett as the Steelers tried to decide which QB would replace Ben Roethlisberger after his retirement, Oladokun was an early cut and was quickly picked up by Kansas City for its practice squad.

Oladokun entered the NFL from South Dakota State, his third college stop after South Florida in his hometown of Tampa and Samford.

For Samford in 2019, Oladokun completed 169-of-272 passes for 2,058 yards with 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions and ran for 491 yards and eight touchdowns on 127 carries.

In 2020, Oladokun completed 37-of-56 passes for 221 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions and ran for 26 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries as Liam Welch became Samford’s No. 1 quarterback.

Another former Samford player also became eligible to play on Sunday when the Cleveland Browns signed safety Chris Edmonds from their practice squad to the active roster.

After playing in two games as a rookie with the Browns in 2024, Edmonds has played in Cleveland’s past six games this season, with five defensive snaps and 107 special-teams plays.

Last week, the Browns waived Edmonds off their active roster. When he went unclaimed, Cleveland signed him back for the practice squad and elevated him for Sunday’s game. He was on the field for 21 special-teams plays in a 31-3 loss to the Chicago Bears.

The Browns play the Buffalo Bills at noon Sunday at Huntington Bank Field in Orchard Park, New York.
