The Kansas City Chiefs were given terrible news on Sunday. Not only were they eliminated from playoff contention, but they also lost quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a torn ACL in the process. ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed many fans’ suspicions shortly after the loss, leaving the Chiefs faithful to wonder what the injury means moving forward, especially for the future of legendary tight end Travis Kelce.
Already, there has been speculation that this could be Kelce’s final chapter based on obvious aging and a busy off-the-field life. Losing Mahomes to such a devastating injury that not only ends this season but also puts his 2026 availability into question. With nothing left to prove at this stage of his career, and with Mahomes unlikely to be back in the starting lineup anytime soon, there is every reason for Kelce to walk away from football.
Patrick Mahomes’ ACL Tear Likely Confirms Travis Kelce Retirement
If Kelce were to retire today, he’d easily go down as one of the best tight ends in NFL history. Coming back for another season where his age shows, especially without Mahomes targeting him, just doesn’t make sense unless he’s doing it for the love of the game.
Including his Week 15 effort, Kelce has remained productive with 797 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 14 games. At the same time, it’s obvious that he’s lost a step. There is no longer an explosive ability, and the sure-handed tight end has had his fair share of drops this season, having entered Sunday with seven on the year after recording five in 2024. This includes a drop against the Houston Texans that would help end Kansas City’s season.
Running things back in 2026, sans Mahomes, would be asking Kelce to take a further step back. Given that he’s one of the most beloved Chiefs of all time, the last thing he needs is to tarnish that love with a less-than-stellar season.
If this is the end of Kelce in Kansas City, it could be the start of a much-needed Chiefs rebuild. This team’s leadership has grown tired and a bit stale, evidenced by the lack of a playoff appearance this season. While the bulk of this blame belongs on the shoulders of the coaching staff, Kelce stepping away opens up the chance for new leaders and playmakers to carve out their own legacies.
Ever since the duo partnered up, it’s been hard to imagine Kelce without Mahomes and vice versa. With that in mind, it officially looks like the Chiefs will be without either of them next season.
