There’s no getting around that Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs aren’t having a great 2025-26 season. The team has a 6-7 record following their loss to the Houston Texans, and they’re a longshot to make it to the postseason, which is a rare place for them to be in the Patrick Mahomes era.
So, the Chiefs are in the hotseat, and that include key players in the organization from the top down, from Reid to Mahomes. There’s work that needs to be done to get this franchise back in shape for the 2025-26 season, and the Kansas City Chiefs need the right staff and leaders to do it.
Reid has been the heart and soul of the Chiefs since he first joined the team as their head coach on January 7, 2013. In more than a decade at the helm, he’s taken them from the bottom to the top, brought back multiple championship victories and found a MVP-winning quarterback in Mahomes. But, in the NFL, what matters is your most recent game, and season, and some have been wondering if Reid will be done with the franchise earlier than expected.
Discussion on Andy Reid and His Future With the Kansas City Chiefs
In a piece out on Wednesday, December 10, Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano of ESPN discuss the state of the NFL and the future of heavyweights in the league.
In their piece, they talk about Reid and the idea of his retirement. They mention his age but actually cite the losing season as a reason that he would want to stay.
“Andy Reid turns 68 next spring and retirement noise swirled around him a couple of years ago,” Graziano states, “but I think the contract extension he received indicates that he’s not interested in hanging it up any time soon — especially with how disappointing this season seems to be for the Chiefs.”
So, it appears Reid is likely to want to stay with the Chiefs and go out on a better note than what’s become one of his lowest-performing season.
Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers Showdown
On Sunday, December 14, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Los Angeles Chargers, and it’s a game they have to win to make the postseason. According to NFL research, the Chiefs have a 13% chance of making the postseason going into the game. If they win, it goes up to 19%, which still isn’t great, but if they lose, it drops to less than one percent.
So, the Kansas City Chiefs will be eliminated from the playoffs if they don’t beat the Los Angeles Chargers, and that’s a strong statement. Even if they win, they have less than a 20% of making it, so it’s a difficult time to be in Chiefs Kingdome.
Looking at the rest of the teams in the NFL, the New England Patriots, Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Rams, Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks and Jacksonville Jaguars are already, for all practical purposes, in the playoffs. More teams will be locked in following their Week 15 games over the weekend.
