It feels like yesterday that Jaydon Blue was all the rage in training camp. The fifth-round pick out of Texas made eye-popping plays on the regular and seemed to be making a beeline for a significant role in Brian Schottenheimer and Klayton Adams’ offense.
Meanwhile, it was questioned why Javonte Williams was given the veteran starter treatment. The Dallas Cowboys’ $1.5 million investment at running back didn’t dress for a single preseason game, which all but anointed him as the starter.
Well, it turns out the coaching staff knew what it was doing with Williams, and that making plays in training camp doesn’t always mean a player will pan out in the regular season. Cowboys fans have learned that the hard way with Blue, who hasn’t seen the field since the Week 8 loss in Denver.
Following the signing of Israel Abanikanda to the practice not, it would be more surprising than not if Blue is active for another game this season.
Cowboys fans shouldn’t expect to see Jaydon Blue active again this season
Blue is comfortably the Cowboys’ most explosive running back. However, if Schottenheimer and Adams wanted him on the field, he would be on the field. The rookie’s speed and big-play ability could take the offense to another level, but he hasn’t been able to earn the coaching staff’s trust.
Instead, it has been Malik Davis, a former undrafted player who has been waived by Dallas numerous times, who has run away with the RB2 job. He has been shot out of a cannon since the bye week, carrying 10 times for 91 yards and a touchdown.
On top of allowing the Cowboys to spell Williams, Davis has also left his mark on special teams. He made a tackle on the following kickoff after his TD run vs. Kansas City and has played a total of 106 special teams snaps this season, including 53 in the last three games, per Pro Football Focus.
Blue played nine such snaps before he entered the proverbial doghouse, and all of those were on Cowboys kickoff returns, not kickoff coverage.
If Abanikanda — the exact type of running back Schottenheimer gravitates toward — impresses in practice, the Cowboys might prefer elevating him from the practice squad over activating Blue if they choose to carry three RBs on game day
Unfortunately, Blue’s stock has never been lower. He doesn’t contribute on special teams, and he’s not trusted to keep Dak Prescott upright in pass protection. Davis is at least passable in those departments, and he’s averaging 7.5 yards per carry while doing so.
Don’t expect to see Blue for the remainder of 2025.
