The Kansas City Chiefs host the Houston Texans in a must-win game in Week 14. If that sounds odd, that’s because K.C. hasn’t experienced actual must-win regular-season games in quite some time, except in instances where they are trying to secure the No. 1 overall seed heading into the postseason.
At this point, the Chiefs need to run the table to have a chance at a playoff spot, placing immense pressure on the roster to perform at a high level every week. With no room for margin, the Chiefs need plenty of good news, and they’re hoping for some in the form of positive injury updates in the next week.
As Week 14 approaches, the Chiefs are coming off a mini-bye, during which players had 10 days of rest after playing two games in five days. Here’s how the injury report stands coming into a new week, and what it would mean for some of the Chiefs’ ailing players to sit out once again.
Josh Simmons, OT
With a fractured wrist, Josh Simmons is undoubtedly going to sit in Week 14 and potentially beyond, which means the Chiefs are already counting on Jaylon Moore to resume starter’s duties on the left sideājust as he did during Simmons’ four-game absence while attending to personal matters. From there, it could get interesting to see if Wanya Morris remains in a swing tackle role or if Esa Pole earns some more trust after flirting with an active roster spot.
Bryan Cook, S
The Chiefs got some good news on Bryan Cook over the weekend, as he avoided a high ankle sprain. That still doesn’t mean he’s been cleared to face Houston just yet. The Chiefs are certainly crossing their fingers because Cook is the best player at a thin position. Chamarri Conner and Jaden Hicks carried the load against the Cowboys, with Mike Edwards playing over 60 percent of snaps as well. That’s a liability if the Chiefs have to go again without Cook in the lineup.
Trey Smith, OL
A high ankle sprain takes time to heal, and Trey Smith is dealing with more than that, which is why Ian Rapoport’s initial report stated that the Chiefs right guard is expected to “miss some time,” including the Cowboys game. Even with 10 days’ rest, Smith might still be shelved against the Texans, which certainly means Mike Caliendo is going to get the starting nod once again. The results aren’t always pretty but there’s no one else who feels like a possibility here in the short term.
Noah Gray, TE
Jared Wiley saw his first bit of playing time on Thanksgiving Day after sitting as a healthy scratch for most of the season. He earned 9 snaps versus 6 for Robert Tonyan behind Travis Kelce. Given that he lost most of his rookie campaign to injury, the Chiefs don’t really know what they have in Wiley, but if Noah Gray remains in the team’s concussion protocol, Wiley might enjoy a longer leash in Week 14 as the Chiefs continue to see how much they can trust him.
Jawaan Taylor, OL
If the Chiefs lose both Simmons and Taylor for an entire game (or more), the Houston Texans are going to feast. Heck, they might do so anyway. Moore is already set at left tackle going into Week 14, but without Taylor, the Chiefs would likely lean on Wanya Morris as they did for the rest of the game against the Cowboys after Taylor suffered an elbow injury. The good news is that our friend Matt Verderame of Sports Illustrated says Taylor could play this week. Either way, Esa Pole becomes very important in this scenario.
Christian Roland-Wallace, DB
Bryan Cook isn’t the only relief the Chiefs could get in the secondary. If Chris Roland-Wallace’s back can heal with some rest, the unit will look a lot more versatile and deep. Roland-Wallace has earned the trust of his coaches this season, and the result has been far more playing time than anyone expectedāat the expense of Jaden Hicks and others. If Roland-Wallace is unable to go, however, the Chiefs might keep leaning on Chamarri Conner in the slot corner role (which is just as confusing as its ever been).
